The Midwest Haircut vs. overweight America

So, as I am sitting here at the airport, I'm in absolute amazement at a few things I keep noticing, two things to be exact. One of which Paul and I have noticed on several different occasions; and we notice it every single time we go back to Wisconsin and South Dakota. It's like you can tell when you're sitting in the airport where all these women are going to or are from! We think it's just a Midwest thing... Here it goes... Why is it that 95% of Midwest women, I'd say between the ages of 30 and 60, have the same damn haircut? There might however be a slight variation of this haircut, but all in all it is the same haircut! I know y'all know what I'm talking about too. It's that "stack in the back", maybe a little longer in the front kind of cut; and if they are closer to the '30ish' age range, then they want to kind of "spike" the back up, have a quasi-part in the front or bang area, and "poof" the hell out of the crown section. They manage to have just a few bangs coming down off to the side of that quasi-part. Now by all means I am not slamming anyone, for the love of god, I just wear my hair up in a ponytail 75% of the time. But good lord ladies, it is not a flattering hair cut on every single woman! This picture is a pretty good example of the cut that I am talking about, and again, there are many versions of this cut, whether it's shorter all over, or maybe a little longer up front... I am sorry, I just had to get it off my chest...

The second thing have noticed, is actually everywhere, not just the airport. It is just that what I was at the airport really put the cherry on top for me. 64% of Americans are overweight, we all know that by now. We can thank many fast food chains for making all this terrible food for you, oh so convenient. This is obviously not the only reason for this crisis, just one of many. Here is an example of what I am talking about... The Jack in the Box Chicken Club Salad has 866 calories in it, and a whopping 59 grams of fat! And they say their salads are part of their healthy menu! I would hate to see what one of their burgers has in it for calories and fat content. Any way, its all about convenience, and pure laziness as consumers. Another example, I ran to Staples the other day for a three ring binder and some paperclips, and what do they have right next to the check out stand? Freaking king size candy bars! Since when do you need a king sized snickers while picking up a few office supplies???!!!

Sorry that was just a tangent I had to go on. Here is what I experienced at the airport. This obese couple sitting across from me while we were waiting for our plane literally had a "food bag" for traveling. I shit you not!! Now maybe I am just jumping to conclusions about this couple. Maybe they needed snack for some serious reason, but somehow I just couldn't buy that thought... You have to understand that this flight from Phoenix to Sioux Falls is only 2 hours and 45 min. It's no flight across the world, where in that case I too probably would have had a "food bag". Let me just give you an idea of what I saw in their "food bag"... salt & vinegar chips, sweetened tea, 2 large roast beef sandwiches, pre-wrapped non-the-less, ranch flavored corn nuts, BBQ flavored corn nuts, cool ranch Doritos, king sized snickers, honey roasted peanuts, and a diet Dr. Pepper...

I chuckled a little as the woman says, "I'm going to quick eat my sandwich before we get on the plane since we've been delayed a half an hour, that way I won't have to eat the sandwich and make a mess on the plane." Are you kidding me lady? You can't tell me with all that junk food you have packed, you're not going to eat anything else while you're on the plane?!... The woman proceeded to finish her sandwich and top it off with the entire bag of BBQ chips and one of the snickers... UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!!

I realize that I am not perfect, no one is. I have several things that I need to work on and by no means am I putting anyone down for the choices that they decide to make. I am just dumb-founded at the obesity in the country and I guess today I just needed to vent about the frustration. This is a life choice that these people make and by all means it is up to them and them only to make these choices. They are hurting themselves and those that love them and if they continue to go down this path, then so be it. This may be selfish, but I do not feel bad one bit for these people, they are doing it to themselves.

It takes all kinds to make the world go round... Whether its a funny haircut or eating their life away. Life, my life does go on...

love the Midwest but.... said...

I have complained about the Midwest haircut a million times! Its an awful cut! Its like a law that if you are a certain age in the Midwest you have to have this haircut at least once in your life (if you live through it, you will come out stronger!)
